Items we do not allow
Some products cannot be given away in Canada, even for free. Others we will not list, because a photo cannot show a crash, an expiry date, or what is inside. A few can be listed only after you confirm they were not recalled and were not in an accident.
This list is fixed. It cannot know what Health Canada recalled this week. Posting anything that has been recalled is not allowed, whether or not our check catches it.
Banned in Canada
These cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
- Baby walkers have been banned in Canada since 2004 because of stair-fall injuries. They cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
- Drop-side cribs are banned in Canada because the moving side can detach and trap a child or let them fall. They cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
- Inclined infant sleep products are banned in Canada because a baby's head can tip forward and block their breathing. They cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
- Infant self-feeding devices are banned in Canada because a baby cannot push the bottle away and can choke. They cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
- Polycarbonate baby bottles made with BPA are banned in Canada because BPA can leach into milk. They cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
- Lawn darts with elongated tips are banned in Canada because the weighted tip can pierce a skull. They cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
- Jequirity beans are banned in Canada because the seed contains abrin and is poisonous if chewed. They cannot be given away, sold, or advertised, even for free.
Not listed on Givolve
These are legal to own. We still do not list them, because nobody can check them from a listing.
- Car seats and booster seats are legal to own, but Givolve cannot check the expiry date, a recall, or whether the seat was in a crash. They cannot be listed.
- Cribs, cradles, and bassinets are legal to own, but a used one can have a broken slat, a wide gap, or a recalled model that we cannot inspect. They cannot be listed.
- Bicycle, ski, snowboard, and hockey helmets are legal to own, but a used helmet can be cracked from an impact we cannot see. They cannot be listed.
- Used mattresses are legal to own, but we cannot check for bed bugs, stains, or a damaged cover. They cannot be listed.
- Cosmetics are legal to own, but we cannot check what is in an opened product or whether it has expired. They cannot be listed.
- Tanning equipment is legal to own, but we cannot verify the lamps or the safety warnings. It cannot be listed.
- Food and prepared meals are legal to give, but we cannot check how they were stored or whether they are still safe to eat. They cannot be listed.
- Medication, supplements, and medical devices are legal to own, but we cannot verify the dose, the expiry, or whether the device is safe. They cannot be listed.
- Weapons, ammunition, and replicas cannot be listed. Givolve cannot verify a licence, a serial number, or whether a replica could be mistaken for a real firearm.
- Alcohol, tobacco, vapes, and cannabis cannot be listed. Givolve cannot verify age, a licence, or what is in the product.
- Live animals cannot be listed. Givolve cannot verify the animal's health or that a home is ready for them.
- Counterfeit goods cannot be listed. A fake item can hide unsafe materials, and we cannot verify that it is genuine.
